Mildenhall & Wisbech Greyhound Trust receive £640 windfall as part of online Greyhound Derby Sweepstake competition

Ahead of their Open Day on Sunday 20th July, the Mildenhall & Wisbech Greyhound Trust recently received a windfall of £640 as part of an online Greyhound Derby Sweepstake competition which was organised by Liam Aspin, kennelhand for Mark Wallis.

Aspin took to social media platform X at the end of April, and for £10 per dog, people had the chance to have their name drawn against a dog totally at random for their duration of the Derby, with all finalists receiving a share of the prize pool.

Aspin explains how he came up with the idea:

"I just had the idea and thought it might be a bit of fun for people and a way of raising a bit of money for the trust. I was heavily oversubscribed and could have sold them twice over, so next year I’ll have a think about how I can do it so nobody misses out!"

"Anybody that had a non-runner before the first round got their money back. I think there were 12 or 13, of which all bar one donated the money back to the charity so that was a big help in raising more than expected!"

" I must thank Irish breeder Sean Conway, he finished in 3rd place with De Lahdedah and donated all of his £180 winnings. Also John Bleasdale and Peter McCall who kindly each gave me £30 for a drink, of which I also donated that to the Trust. It was all really appreciated"

"Finally to everybody that played, a big thank you to them"

"You never know if people are going to want to play something like that, but they did in big numbers! Some have asked me about doing one for the Irish Derby - if there’s enough interest I’ll consider it”
