Irish Performance of the Week

The taking off of Magical Luka continued apace at Tralee last week with a new 500y track record for the Patrick Guilfoyle-trained runner. He is now a perfect 5/5 for his career and is really looking like a serious talent at the time when the Irish scene is flooded with top-notch performers. He is a top priced 33/1 for the Boylesports Irish Derby with Unibet.

It was a very tough decision at Tralee as there was also a track record from Seven Beach over the 550y distance. He had produced a flying run last week and went quicker again this time around. It makes sense then that the pair are given the award to share between them.

The final of the Sporting Press Irish Oaks went to Carrigmore Freya who landed the prize for Graham Holland. The kennel were out of luck at Towcester in the Derby on Saturday night but they were able to land the big one at Shelbourne. She is a litter sister to Untold Ruble and Untold Shah so it is very much a litter with the girls on top.

It was a sparkling run from Broadstrand Syd at Cork, going close to the 28-dead barrier as the fastest time of 2025 so far. The defending Bar One Sprint Champion has only had four starts this year so if connections are looking to head back to defend his title, he will arrive fresher than many.

Speaking of the Bar One Sprint, Lennies Tank was just 18 spots slower than Broadstrand Syd's track record from last summer with his win at Dundalk. He took over the quickest time of the year from Magical Luka, with things heating up ahead of July 19 when the competition starts this year.
