Trainer Of the Year Standings - August

The latest standings for the trainer of the year have been published on the GBGB website with Mark Wallis at the top of the list using the points system. All standings are up to and including Sunday, August 3.

The Greyhound Board of Great Britain points system's current standings

Mark Wallis 1236

Patrick Janssens 850

Maxine Locke 500

Kevin Hutton 485

Liz McNair 321

Nathan Hunt 300

Let’s look at wins. Mark Wallis is out in front with 126 wins from 353 runners. Kevin Hutton is next in with 126 winners from 404 runners, with Star Sports / TRC English Greyhound Derby winning trainer Patrick Janssens in third with 114 winners from 299 runners. Maxine Locke (94 from 474) and Nathan Hunt (78 from 304) in fourth and fifth.

The total prize money won sees Patrick Janssens on top with £265,955 with Mark Wallis in second with £220,420. Third place goes to Maxine Locke with £109,270.

Janssens, of course, took the Star Sports / TRC English Greyhound Derby with Droopys Plunge staying on well to claim the prize money on offer. Plunge went round Nottingham last night in a 500-metre trip and clocked 29.38 (+30) to suggest all is well ahead of a possible tilt at the upcoming Arena Racing Company Select Stakes at the Cowley Road venue.

The top performers for prize money from the Mark Wallis kennel in 2025 are Mongys Wild and Proper Heiress, who won the PRG Regency and Coral Sussex Cup over the weekend, as well as New Destiny.

Mongys Wild has won thirteen on the bounce in 2025 and is now could be aimed at the Select Stayers at Nottingham with £12,500 up for grabs or the Ladbrokes Summer Stayers at Monmore with £10,000 on offer to the winner of the Category One competition.

Let’s look at win percentages for those with over 120 runners this calendar year.

Patrick Janssens 38.1%

Mark Wallis 35.7%

Liz McNair 33.3%

Kevin Hutton 31.2%

Nathan Hunt 25.7%

Dave Lee 25.5%

Seamus Cahill 24.1%

Jimmy Fenwick 22.2%

Dave Mullins 21.0%

Richard Rees 20.4 %

An interesting stat released on the GBGB Trainer of the Year standings list is the profit and loss column. In the top 20 only Newcastle trainer Jimmy Fenwick is showing a profit and that stands at £38.03. The northeast-based trainer is currently 9th in the standings with 246 points, 28 wins from 126 runners and a percentage strike rate of 22.2% with total prize money earned at £58,100. Of those currently showing a negative towards the top of the standings, Kevin Hutton is -£54.04, Maxine Locke is -£147.78 and Paul Young -£204.19 based off 465 runners and 72 winners.

Plenty of top-class racing over the next couple of weeks, so these standings will of course change.

Over at Monmore on Saturday, August 23, all eyes will be on the Ladbrokes Gold Cup with £10,000 in prize money on offer to the winner and £15,000 in total as the Category One final takes place over the standard four-bend 480-metre trip at the Midlands venue.

The Ladbrokes Summer Stayers Classic will also take place on Saturday, August 23 with £10,000 going to the winner. The Category One event over the six-bend 630 metres will attract the best stays in the country looking to land the prize.

Supporting opens on the night include the Category Three Peter Billingham Memorial Trophy, worth £1500 and the Vixons Contracts Ltd Trophy, also worth £1500 to the winner. The Ladbrokes 210, 264, 480 and 480 bitches open race will also take place on finals night with each race worth £500 to the winner.

The Arena Racing Company Puppy Classic takes place at Nottingham over the coming weeks with the final taking place on Monday, August 25 with £12,500 up for grabs. Patrick Janssens goes into that competition with a strong hand with Romeo Alliance looking to follow up his success in the JR Racing Juvenile Classic at Towcester.

Over at Oxford, the Category Two BGBF British Bred Oaks final will take place on Saturday, August 16 with £3000 on offer to the winner.
