Sunday's Towcester Tips

*** 4.44 Towcester - Avongate Venus (3pts) 2/1

** 2.16 Towcester - Kranky Drake (2pts) 13/8

* 3.29 Towcester - Bowmers Wildcat (1pt) 13/2

A bitches contest at 4.44 is one of the most interesting races on the card. Icemans Girl bounced back to winning ways at Hove last time while Fabulous Aria has a pair of quick recent wins here. The vote is going to Phil Milner's Avongate Venus, however, to back up her Doncaster win from three weeks back.

She was unlucky to draw a Derby first round heat that contained Bockos Diamond but looked to be heading back to her peak with that win in Yorkshire. She was the Empress Stakes winner from last year where she beat Icemans Girl in the final. A repeat of that level of form would make her very hard to contain.

There is a fascinating puppy contest at 2.16. Bresbet Gymcrack finalist Romeo Ability sets a strong standard for Patrick Janssens but we are taking him on with a newcomer. Kranky Drake has been hugely impressive in trials so far for Kevin Hutton and can make a winning race debut.

He has a 26.82 at Oxford, a 28.85 at Central Park and a 29.06 at Towcester already on his card. In his Towcester trial he beat four-time Category One semi-finalist Burrows Eclipse four lengths and while a six runner race is a totally different task for him, he clearly is a well above average youngster.

One at a much bigger price that could be of interest is Bowmers Wildcat in the 3.29. He arguably doesn't have the same class as Droopys Trade and Droopys Aladdin in traps one and three, nor perhaps of the newcomer Vermithor in trap two. What he does have, however, is a beautiful draw to work from.

He pinged out in a trial to register a very solid 29.14 in his first look at Towcester. There is plenty of early inside him but with Droopys Trade moving right in the red jacket and Droopys Aladdin left from the white jacket, it is a race where something on the outside could just slip clear at a price.
