Pele scores again to land Towcester hat-trick
The dust has now settled following the completion of the first round of the StarSports/TRC Greyhound Derby but the open race action continued at Towcester on Sunday, with the five open’s featuring at the Northamptonshire venue, four of them over the 500m distance.
Heather Dimmock’s Jacktavern Pele (6/1) has been in fine form in recent weeks, and he scored again to land a hat-trick of victories when pinging the lids to make all the running over 500m, holding off the strong finish of Laurence Tuffin’s Fabulous Livia to hold on by a length in a time of 29.22. That was his sixth victory in his last ten starts and has finished runner up in three other occasions, and in his current form, could take plenty of beating in these one-off opens.
Tuffin had early gone one place better when his October 23 youngster Easy Texas (5/2) landed a first open race success when making all the running in a maiden contest, getting the better of Michelle Brown’s Commanche by 1 ¾ lengths in 29.46. He too has been in good form of late with this victory making it four wins from six starts, finishing runner up on the other two occasions.
Brown too had gone one place better earlier on in the card when her strong running Crafty Prospero (2/1J) landed his first open race success. After a slow start and overcoming trouble in running on a couple of occasions, he hit the front coming off the last bend to draw clear for a 3 ¼ length victory in 29.65, and this August 23 puppy already looks as if he will stay further than the 500m distance.
The other contest over 500m was won by Carol Weatherall’s Gel on Girl,(6/1). She got the better of some crowding off the last bend to take up the lead and held off the late effort of Doohoma Princess, crossing the line in front by a neck in a time of 29.89, a time that is reflective of the trouble that occurred during the race.
The remaining open on the card was a sprint contest over 270m and it produced a surprise result. Sean White’s in form runner Broadway Murty was looking to land the four-timer at Towcester, but the 4/7F was denied having had nowhere to go at the first bend and finished down the field in fourth, and it was the Patrick Janssens trained Romeo Kingpin (12/1) who came out on top having led at the first bend to cause the upset.
Sheffield
Just the two Opens featured on Sheffield’s afternoon card and they went the way of Rose Draper and Sean Davy
Distant Fox (15/8J) provided Draper with her winner when trapping well and making all the running to score over the 660m distance by 1 ½ lengths from Burgess Bono. That was first victory since Janaury where he again made all the running, and again, beat Burgess Bono by a similar distance.
Davy’s winner came courtesy of the in-form Good Knick (4/5F) who had to overcome trouble in running on the run up and rounding the opening bend to hit the front, and was never in danger after that when securing a 1 ¾ length victory from Loose Cannon in 27.78, not only landing him the hat-trick in doing so, but also making in four wins in his last five starts in the process.
Valley
A 260m sprint contest was the only open race to be held on Valley’s morning meeting and it went the way of Anna Jeffery’s Hawkfield Scar (5/6F), who overcame early trouble to pounce close home to deny Rollerball by a head in a time of 16.22 to land a hat-trick of victories over the sprint distance.
