Patrick Godfrey kennel update – Arthur Job all set for Hove

Arthur Job, who only turned two last week, will head to Hove on Saturday for a 515-metre trial with the prospect of entering the upcoming Sussex Cup at the south coast venue.

Speaking to trainer Patrick Godfrey today, he said this about the July 2023 son of Coolavanny Hoffa: “He ran really well in the 3 Steps To Victory final on Sunday at Sheffield and came out of the race well. He showed lovely pace down the back straight and off the fifth bend I got my hopes up a bit. He must have made up around four lengths on the winner, Wicky Ned, who was ultra-impressive and showed huge early pace. It was a fantastic day all round. Sheffield looked after us really well, and it was great to see so many people there.’’

Talking about what's next, Godfrey went on to say: “I didn’t expect him to go so well during the competition. To be honest, the original plan was to have a couple of weeks off, but he chased Ned home so well we will head to Hove for a trial on Saturday. Then, if all is well, we enter the Sussex Cup. The 515-metre trip should suit but it looks like it’ll be a hot competition. Hopefully he goes well in a trial and gets in.''

Speaking about targets after Hove for Arthur Job, Godfrey said: “The Summer Stayers at Monmore would be on the agenda, the 630-metre trip around there wouldn’t be a concern and that comes up the week after the Sussex Cup, so it would be ideal really because we don’t do much with them at home, they rest and recover.’’

The conversation then moved onto Arthur Cornflake and Patrick said: “He will trial tonight at Swindon, and then he will also head down to Hove on the weekend for a look round. He’s got a bit more early pace than Arthur Job and has some nice Monmore wins on his card. He ran in the Irish Derby last year and was unlucky to be eliminated in a coin toss after finishing a dead heat third in the second-round heats. I’ve only got five now and four will head to Hove on Saturday.’’

Arthur Crumpet runs in the Coral Saturday Night 500 Bitches Open Race at 6.42 and looks well-drawn out in T6, but it’s an ultra-competitive race with 2025 Coral Coronation Cup winner Fabulous Sonique in T4 and early-paced local runner Kelvins Hat in T1 for Seamus Cahill.

Arthur Minute lines up from T1 in the Coral Saturday Night 500 Standard Open Race at 7.49 for Godfrey. Ballymac Kobe looks an interesting runner from T3 for the Maxine Locke kennel on competitive Hove debut. He moved well in a two-bend trial last week and will prove hard to beat on Saturday evening with a ping break.

Speaking about rehoming, Patrick said: “We only have a handful of runners and like to make sure they have forever homes lined up. Arthur Cucumber and Arthur Cabbage have just gone to the Shropshire Greyhound Trust and have been spayed and are ready to go onto their forever homes with all costs covered.
