Trainer Chat- Taberner hopeful of strong Towcester showing
Monmore trainer Richie Taberner heads to Towcester with a team of four looking to land a first Derby title. Those runners are Aero Boris, Aero Sacundai, Droopys Maximus and Holding Harry.
Best Chance: “Droopys Maximus for me, He gets every yard of the 500m, he won at Monmore very well over 630m beating a good class field and he’s a good strong dog. We’ve put him round Towcester twice and he fell out of the boxes, but at Monmore he absolutely blasts out of them, and if he can break out of them like he can at Monmore, he’ll go well. He was in with Cheap Sandwiches at Towcester a couple of weeks back, he was about four-five lengths behind at the third bend when the three dog moved off and bumped into him. He lost four-five lengths and only got beat by that sort of distance so he would have been thereabouts at the finish
Surprise Package: “We’ve got a lovely homebred dog called Aero Boris, I’m giving him a solo trial at Monmore tonight, but he’s another dog who wants every yard of that 500m as he’s a very strong finisher. He’s won round Towcester as a pup, but he’s come on leaps and bounds over the last couple of months, and he will be finishing as strong as anything
If you could train any other dog in the Derby, who would it be: “I’d have Bockos Diamond, because we had the pick of the litter and we picked his brother Aero Pattika! What could have been! He’s a fantastic dog, he’s got everything hasn’t he. He cuts the bend lovely from out wide, and I wouldn’t say he’s a wide dog, but he’s got that much early, and he cuts a lovely bend and what a dog to have in the kennel
Favourite Derby Memory or Highlight: “It’s only our third year as a kennel; we got to the quarter-final in our first year with Aero Arran which was a great adventure. Derby Night highlights I’d say when Aero Sacundai broke the track record in the Hope Jeal Sprint Trophy Final last year, which still stands today. We’ve had a winner on Derby Final night for the two years that we’ve been training which is good for the kennel and hopefully we can continue that this year
What would it mean to win the Derby: “It’s just what dreams are made of. We are all in it to win a Derby. We won a Cat One last year which was unbelievable, but to win a Derby is the epitome of the sport isn’t it. It’s what you dream of, like playing Football for England, but you need the ammunition in the kennel. It’s an adventure, we aren’t taking it overly seriously, you need a lot of luck as well as a fast dog. We’ve got a couple of dogs that we think could make the quarter-finals, Aero Sacundai and Droopys Maximus, and maybe Aero Boris could keep pinching a place to qualify
