Sunday Open Report - Paul Philpott double at Star Pelaw

Knockard Joe and Toomervara Sheera landed a double on the night for trainer Paul Philpott at Star Pelaw.

Joe was sent off as the 11/10 favourite in the Star Pelaw 590 Stayers Trophy open race and duly obliged, leading at the fifth bend before powering clear to claim a two-length victory in 36.29. Toomervara Sheera caused an upset in the Star Sports #bettingpeople open race over the 435-metre trip, winning at 10s, beating 11/10 favourite Chippy Chase, who finished second. Sheera paced up well in the corner from his wide draw in T6 and never saw a rival as he made all in 25.92.

Elsewhere, on the card we saw wins for Popper Duke (10/11) in the 590 Maiden at 6.11. Leading at the first bend, Duke held off the late challenge from Maes Maya (T4) and took the race by three quarters of a length in 37.10. Division two of the Star Pelaw 245 Maiden Sprint at 6.46 went to Basher from T6 in 14.81 with odds-on favourite Savana Pink second at 4/9.

The first division of the sprint at 7.24 went to Burrow Bell who made all in 14.50 to reward those that snapped up the 13/8 on offer from bookmakers. Savana Spiderman finished second at 15/8 with Savana Mist back in third from T6.

At 8.34 in the Star Pelaw 435 Maiden Trophy, all eyes were on Tassie Twirl as the August 2023 daughter of Serene Ace lined up from T1 at ½. Heathmill Barron was quick away from T4 and that forced the favourite to check off at the first bend and suddenly this was a wide-open event. Heathmill Barron went onto make all in 26.22, with Individual Man finishing second from T6 at 25’s. The forecast paid £87.33, well done if you found that one!

Bitzer Maloney took the Star Pelaw 245 Sprint Trophy open race at 8.52 with a quick-away-made-all success in 14.48. Sent off at 5/2, this was all over bar the shouting at the first bend as the June 2022 son of Burgess Bucks led round and kicked for home. Mags Star finished second from T4 with race favourite Westfield Bullet back in third.

Towcester open race report

Over at Towcester it was all eyes on the Category One JR Racing Juvenile Classic with the Patrick Janssens-trained trio Romeo Alliance, Romeo Ability and Not So Steady lining up from traps one, two and four.

Not So Stready led round but Alliance nipped up his inside down the back straight and powered clear to a three-and-a-half length success. Romeo Ability finished third to land the one-two-three for the kennel.

A little earlier on in the Towcester Stayers open race at 2.16, Doohoma Princess made all from T3 and held off the late challenge from Bank Of Granda (T5), who looked a little unlucky in running. Doohoma Princess clocked 43.53 on her first competitive run since late June.

In the Towcester Standard at 2.33, Tax Evader was sent off as the 4/7 favourite, but he never landed a blow from T6 after a stumble at lid rise. Gripwell Peg led round from T2 at 4’s and kicked for home but strong staying Too Wright (T1) was within striking distance, and she got up late on to claim the victory in 29.71.

The Towcester Maiden at 3.11 saw Vermithor line up from T1 as the 4/7 favourite, but it was the Frank Gray-trained Makeit Blondie who pinged the lids from T6 and made all in 29.48 to reward those that took the 4’s on offer from bookmakers. Kalukis Gamble grabbed second at 7’s with Vermithor back in third.

A little later on Romeo Steel was sent off as the ¼ favourite in the Towcester Standard open at 4.26 and this race was all over bar the shouting at lid rise. The August 2022 son of Ballymac Cashout made all in 29.06 to make it seven wins on the bounce. Newinn Sharky finished second from T1 with lightly raced Crossfield Ranger back in third from T3.
