Defending champion off to a flying start

New Destiny produced a stunning performance to get the defence of her Coral Coronation Cup crown off to a winning start at Romford on Friday evening.

The reigning champion was sent off 1/3 favourite for heat two of the 575m competition and appeared to have an awful lot on her plate when caught up in trouble at the first bend after not being able to get across from trap four.

However, the Mark Wallis-trained superstar showed tremendous track craft to weave through the field before surging into the lead at the fifth turn. She stretched out to score by a remarkable eight and a half lengths in 35.00, with Golden Palace and Tivoli Milo chasing her home.

Radical Scoby (3/1) set the standard with an excellent 34.82 when beating Fabulous Sonique by three and a quarter lengths.

Fresh from landing the greyhoundtrader.com Stakes final at Towcester last weekend, Maxine Locke’s dog turned second to Fabulous Sonique before making a winning move into the lead at the fifth bend and pulling away nicely. Keefill Goose picked up the third qualifying spot.

Avongate Venus made the step up to six bends a winning one when justifying 5/6 favouritism in impressive fashion.

Phil Milner’s bitch showed her early speed to get first run and had no stamina issues from there, as she crossed the line two and three-quarter lengths ahead of Whitewood Luke, with a further three lengths back to Jades Rocket.

Seamus Cahill’s Hogans Hawk (5/6fav) clocked the same time when touching off Mad For Sterling to land his heat,  in which Razldazl Myway finished third.

Dower Duchess (9/2) struck for Gemma Evans in the opening heat, beating Nors News and Lily Bullet in 35.40, while Cree Bono (35.36) sprang an 8/1 surprise when denying better-fancied rivals Teddie and Brigadir Brindle in the concluding heat.

The other open race at the London Road circuit was a 400m contest which went the way off 10/11 favourite Padders Information, who made all and stopped the clock at 23.86 (+10).

Nothing between Puppy Trophy winners at Sunderland

Only one spot separated the two winners in the semi-finals of the Arena Racing Company Puppy Trophy at Sunderland.

Jacktavern Chief was the quickest as he overcame traffic problems to strike in 26.93.

The 13/8 favourite took a bump at the opening bend as Sunnyside Gurkha set the early fractions, but Kevin Hutton’s charge flew down the back straight to take it up from the third bend and went on to beat that rival by four and three-quarter lengths.

Witton Versace was left with a mountain to climb after early trouble and Jill Sutherst’s dog ran a blinder to get up for third place in the dying strides.

Slingshot Puppy was beaten to the punch by Sunnyside Jayden in the opening semi-final before racing into the lead at the halfway point.

Pat Buckley’s bitch was pressed late by the fast-finishing Greenwell Tyson but the Irish raider held on to score by a short head in 26.94, with Sunnyside Jayden completing the line-up for next week’s final in third.

There were also two heats of the Arena Racing Company 450 standard on the menu at the Wearside venue, with Tom Heilbron’s 10/11 favourite Madabout Peck (26.88) beating Coolavanny Mercy and Hardwick Mighty in the first instalment, while Shinjum Magic (10/1) got the better of Fraser and Brindle Bully to land the second heat in 27.32.

Heilbron initiated a double earlier in the night when his Romeo Alonso hacked up over 640m to win by eight lengths from Trewmount Fury in 39.68.

There was also a brace for Carl Jackson, who won both heats of the Arena Racing Company Dash courtesy of One The Nose (5/1) and Lion Heart (3/10fav) in 15.50 and 15.47 respectively.
