Banksies Five to Follow- Friday 25th July

Each week I’ll be looking to find Five Puppies who have caught the eye in graded in action in the last week who could be worth following in the coming weeks.

Just the one winner last week as Belinda Green’s Bombshell Bullet gained a first victory in A3 at Hove on Wednesday morning, overcoming trouble in running to take up the lead on the run for home at 11/8F.

Moving on to this week:

DROOPYS RUNAWAY: Ran from Trap 4 in the 11.34am at Hove on Friday 18th July

Ricky Holloway’s March 24 youngster battled well to make a winning debut last Friday morning in an A7 at Hove and looks sure to improve further from that performance

Having trapped in midfield, Droopys Runaway went up well enough to the opening bend but faced a wall of greyhounds as he came to the bend. He had nowhere to go at this point and had to check off wide, dropping back a couple of lengths in doing so but as the rest of the field continue to bunch up between the opening bends, he was able to nip through on the rail and coming out of the second bend, was a length and a half in front.

That lead reduced to a length when he came under pressure from the third bend by Trap six Andypaulsteve, and despite having to overcome some crowding off the last bend and some extra unwanted attention on the run for home, Droopys Runaway was able to hold on by a neck to score by a neck in 30.79 (-20) at 11/4.

One way or another, Droopys Runaway looks sure to have learned a lot from that performance and it’s hard to see him not improving again in the coming weeks. With a clearer passage, he looks the type that can progress nicely through the grades In the coming week.

NO NAME PAT: Ran from Trap 2 in the 3.09pm at Swindon on Saturday 19th July

No Name Pat is winless after her three previous starts, but she has been improving on the clock with each run, and it looks to be a matter of time before Deborah Pearce’s January 24 puppy gets off the mark in A6 action.

Saturday saw her producing her slowest sectional of her three starts so far which saw her heading into the first bend in last, three lengths behind her nearest rival in fifth, and a good seven lengths behind the leader. That gap widened and out of the second bend, No Name Pat would have been ten lengths behind at the rear of the field.

From the third bend through, her stamina started to kick in and moved from last into third within a few strides. That gap narrowed with each stride and she was able to take second place close to home, finishing just two and a half lengths behind the winner.

If she can brush up on her trapping skills, she is more than capable of proving too strong for these provided she can gain a clear run at the vital times. A slight word of warning though, after the race on her last two starts, she has been involved with the winner at the bend, which could indicate she may have ulterior motives, but she is only young and gaining experience with each outing  and it may only have happened when the hare gets whipped round to the pick up and can easily be given the benefit of doubt at present

WESTWOOD BETTY: Ran from Trap 2 in the 4.47pm at Central Park on Monday 21st July

Barry O’Sullivan’s March 24 youngster Westwood Betty has finished runner up in both starts now, including on Monday afternoon and she will be looking to go one place better next time out back in D3 company

Westwood Betty only broke moderately and heading into the first bend, she was in fifth place over three lengths behind the leader. She then lost a little more in running as the door was closed against the rails but nothing serious, and turning on the run for home, she was in fourth, a good three lengths still off the leader.

It was then though she stayed on strongly, making up ground with each stride but ultimately just failing to reel in the winner, just doing down by a neck. Although only minimal, it was still her best time on the clock and being so young, looks set for more improvement again, and once she is able to break on terms, then her finishing kick could see her landing a first victory next time out

BAMBIS MISS: Ran from Trap 4 in the 6.42pm at Swindon on Tuesday 22nd July

Things couldn’t have gone much better for Darryl Porter’s Bambi’s Miss on Tuesday, when his February 24 puppy ran out an impressive winner of an A9 contest at Swindon

When the traps opened, Bambis Miss produced a moderate break, but it was still better than efforts produced by two other rivals, and heading into the first bend, she was in a handy third place just over a length or so behind the two leaders.

It was at this point though when one of the two front runners decided to lunge at the other, resulting in a straightforward disqualification at the end of the race.  As a result of which though, it allowed Bambis Miss to hit the front and off the second bend, had an advantage of two and a half lengths.

The result was never in doubt though and she pulled clear for a five and three quarter length victory in 29.57 (-10), producing an improved time on the clock from trials nearly six lengths quicker then she had previously achieved. She is unlikely to receive such a charmed outing again next time out, but you wouldn’t be surprised if she had more to offer in the coming weeks

KINIELTY BEX: Ran from Trap 3 in the 1.26pm at Nottingham on Wednesday 23rd July

Like Bambis Miss, Kinielty Bex also ran out a wide margin winner on her debut at Nottingham in an A5 contest Wednesday morning

Sent off at 5/1, Elaine Saville’s debutant trapped well and was able to hit the front rounding the opening bend, when knocking a rival out of the way as they challenged each other. The February 24 youngster was then able to take advantage of some crowding behind her at the second bend and down the back, Kinielty Bex had built up a lead of around three lengths.

At the third bend though, she seemed to kick again and drew further clear, before going on to cross the line six and a quarter lengths clear of her rivals in a time of 30.54(+50).

That was a pleasing performance and was an improvement on the clock from her trial performances, going almost six lengths quicker than her previous best time. Whether she can find that sort of improvement again next time out may be pushing things a little, but she can improve again, and if that’s the case, then she may not be far away from landing the double
