Getup The Boy lands the Time Juvenile Derby
If ever there is a time for a greyhound to get their head in front for the first time in their career, the final of the €25,000 Time Juvenile Derby has to be up there as one of the best times to do it.
That was the case for the Mark Robinson-trained Getup The Boy who powered home to lift the competition trophy at Shelbourne last night. Owned by Daniel Ornstein, Getup The Boy has caught the eye on numerous occasions already in his short career. It would be hard for anyone to deny that he fully deserved to get his head in front.
His dam Peckies Flyer is a litter sister to English Derby finalist Bramble Fairone, from a repeat Ballymac Matt mating which produced Ballymac Cooper on the first occasion., so the quality is there in his pedigree.
The 2024 competition was won by Callaway Knegare who would subsequently finish third in the Boylesports Irish Derby. A quick chat with connections this morning revealed that they are the patient type and will not be lured into a tilt at the big one.
Regarded as too young (Jan 24) to be pitched in that deep, they will keep him in puppy stakes for now and wait for the Irish Derby in 2026. In a sport where so often it feels like there is no tomorrow, it is refreshing to see owners resisting temptation. Hopefully it will pay off for them and Getup The Boy can be a leading contender next year.
Rural Pest was sent off as the favourite, improving with each round of the competition to that point. He didn't come away quite as well as he did in the quarter or semi-final and couldn't clear the field inside him at the opening bend.
It was Unanimous Leo who turned in front after pacing up best to the turn. The winner of the Kilkenny Champion Open Unraced in May looked like he might add a second big competition win to his resume halfway down the back, but he just found Getup The Boy stronger coming home.
Third home was Droopys Faithful who had just a single run to her credit ahead of the opening round. The sole bitch in the final was drawn next to her litter brother Toolmaker King who whipped the field in. The eye-catcher was Ballymac Tibet who finished fifth but went clear to the drop. He made the third round of the English Derby and shapes as if he can follow his half-brother Jaytee Craze up in trip.
Elsewhere on the card there was a win for Solo And Go (a litter brother to Ballymac Tibet) for Liam Dowling in the Time Juvenile Derby Consolation race. He only went two spots slower, though he was away and gone for his success. .
