Witton Gucci goes quickest in BGBF British Bred Maiden Derby heats
Witton Gucci set the standard in the heats of the BGBF British Bred Maiden Derby at Newcastle on Thursday evening.
Despite being sent off at 5/1, there was no fluke about her victory as Jill Sutherst’s bitch came together with neighbour Wraysbury Silver out of the boxes, before showing smart early speed to turn on the shoulder of early leader Fabulous Evening.
The Sunderland raider took it up down the far side and stretched out nicely to beat 8/13 favourite Sirdar by two and three-quarter lengths in 28.47 (+10), with Blackhousewalton further back in third.
Trapstyle Bluey ensured Rose Draper’s trip to the north east wasn’t a wasted one by landing the odds with ease in heat three.

On only his third start for the Sheffield handler, the 2/5 favourite had to ride some early crowding but powered into the lead at the third bend and pulled clear in style to score in 28.56 (+10).
16/1 shot Hurry Up Ivy was three and three-quarters lengths behind in second, while Witton Versace took the final qualifying spot.
Fabulous Adriana gave the locals something to cheer about when justifying 4/7 favouritism by six and a quarter lengths in the second heat.
The Joe Edgar-trained bitch quickly took command with a burst of early pace and the race was over by the second bend. The January 2023 daughter of Magical Bale maintained a furious march to score easily in 28.60 (+10) from Witton Cash and Billy Cee Dixie.
The opening heat went the way of Greenwell Bolt but he had to do things the hard way score as the 13/8 joint-favourite in 28.64 (+10).
John Flaherty’s inmate was slowly into his stride in the white jacket as Blackhouse Zoom and Fabulous Harmony set the early fractions.
However, the latter pair had to settle for second and third, in that order, as the winner loomed large of the last bend and flew up the home straight to get up in the dying strides.
